Air: Iain Kettles and Susie Hunter

In 2001-2002 An Lanntair commissioned artists Iain Kettles and Susie Hunter to design a bouncy sculpture in collaboration with two pre-school groups. The artists are well known for their humorous, colourful inflatable sculptures. These include the Tramway commission ‘Space Invader’ a huge molecular structure squeezed between two buildings in Glasgow as a reaction to the city’s Year of Architecture and Design in 1999.

When Iain and Susie visited Croileagan Uig, pupils from Uig Primary were also able to meet them, see slides of their work and grapple with their giant inflatable sculptures.

In June 2002 documentation of the process of designing the sculpture was exhibited at An Lanntair, alongside further examples of the artists’ work. As a follow-up to the artists’ visit Uig School pupils spent a fun-filled afternoon at the gallery, studying the artists’ working process, making drawings of their favourite sculptures and creating their own inflatables using balloons.
