Rachel Sermanni
‘Black Currents’ Debut EP out January 30th
After months of anticipation, 20-year-old singer-songwriter Rachel Sermanni unleashes her debut, self-released ‘Black Currents’ EP on January 30th. And trust us, it’s been well worth the wait. Written by Rachel and produced by Communion’s Ian Grimble – who has just finished adding the vital touches to the Benjamin Francis Leftwich LP – ‘Black Currents’ launches Rachel onto to the new music scene with much aplomb and will establish her as one of the key acts to look out for in 2012.
A talented instrumentalist, Rachel puts her own, unique spin on a time-honoured genre, reinforcing her songs with a tough outer shell but all the while imbuing them with splashes of humour. There’s ‘Breathe Easy’ – a song built on a brave, a cappella backbone and fleshed out with a forthright strings and keys section – the dynamic ‘Black Current’ which rises and falls with an intoxicating swoon – and ‘Song To a Fox’ – a wintry hymn sculpted from haunting, spacious cries. That’s not forgetting lead track ‘The Fog’, which has been chosen as the EP’s first single namely for its larger-than-life chorus, delicately balanced timbre and truly captivating vocals.
