This exhibition, which is taking place during the Hebridean Celtic Festival, features 2 bodies of work by 3 different artists, Kate Whiteford, Jon Macleod and Anne Campbell. July 2007

“Sgrìobhte air an Talamh: Drawn on the Land”

Kate Whiteford is an internationally acclaimed artist. She was commissioned by the Venice Biennale in 1990, created the famous Corryvrechan tapestry for the Royal Museum, and was short listed for the Stirling prize. Her work is based on the archaeology and patterning of the land through use – lazybeds, peat-cutting and crofting.

Jon MacLeod and Anne Campbell are island-based and their project “a-mach an gleann” is based on the cultural and linguistic heritage of Lewis, particularly the historical “lost” place names of the Bragar moor.

Thus the exhibition is about land and how it is used, mapped and remembered; the memory that people have of the land and the memory that the land retains of people.an gleann
