12 boats website banner.jpg

'12 Boats' by Sarah Egholm is currently on display in an Lanntair's bar and café.

This collection of fresh canvases depicts 12 working boats in Tobermory Harbour on the Isle of Mull, observed and sketched throughout the summer of 2011. Sarah graduated from Chelsea College of Art & Design in 2008, with a First Class BA (Hons) degree in Textile Design, specialising in screen printing and eco processes. Sarah is inspired by the master abstract painters of her ancestral homeland, the Faroe Islands, where the subject matter is often the natural environment, boats and the sea!

An Exhibition by Moira Maclean: 3rd October – 19th November

Exhibition tour with Moira Maclean: Friday 18th November, 7pm, An Lanntair Gallery, £5

The Outer Hebrides are saturated in tradition, custom and folklore, drawing on Irish (Gaelic) culture, Scandinavian (Viking) influence and all parts between. An island, a village, a house can be a crucible for beliefs and practices, where culture grows as on a Petri dish.

Bheil rud caillte | Is A Thing Lost
An sgoth 'Jubilee' faisg air Sùla Sgeir - The sgoth 'Jubilee' off Sùla Sgeir, photo by Michael Skelly

Bheil rud caillte... mas aithne ca' bheil e?

Is a thing lost... if you know where it is?

This is a part of a family story from Lewis. The cook has thrown all the cutlery over the side of the boat along with the washing up water. He breaks the news to the skipper by posing the question – Is a thing lost….. if you know where it is?  But if a thing can’t really be lost if you know its whereabouts, there’s nothing to worry about. Because you know for sure that all the stuff is over there, down at the bottom. The exhibition opening at an Lanntair on Friday 25th March is an exploration of storytelling in many forms.
